Mangrove forests grow in the salty, muddy margins of tropical coastlines, where few other trees can survive. Their tangled roots slow incoming waves, and the sediment trapped among them gradually builds up the shoreline. This protective function became widely appreciated after several storm surges, when villages behind intact mangroves suffered less damage than those along cleared coasts. The roots also shelter juvenile fish and crustaceans, so many commercial fisheries depend indirectly on the forests. Despite this, large areas have been converted into shrimp ponds, and the lost trees cannot be replaced quickly, because seedlings need stable, sheltered conditions to establish themselves. Some governments now pay coastal communities to replant and guard mangroves, although success varies with the species chosen and the care given afterwards. Researchers note that planting trees on unsuitable mudflats often fails, whereas restoring natural water flow can allow forests to recover unaided.
